'Less is More' - Acoustic Sound the Oberhausen Gasometer
An excited audience and a successful experiment for the Gasomter: Marillion convinced with gentle tones and the landmark of Oberhausen could prove its qualities as a club location.
More than 600 guests were attracted by the eighties prog-rock band Marillion who played in the impressive interior of the Gasometer. Instead of the common hard drums and basses, softer tones prevailed true to the motto of their Europe tour 'Less is More'. In the course of their acoustic tour the band predominantly played at exclusive places like for example theatres and churches. The unique spatial experience of the industrial cathedral matched perfectly with the programme. Just a few days after the proclamation of the date the concert was already sold out.
For the first time in the history of the Gasometer the exhibition area below the gas pressure disc became a seated concert hall. The scenery was a replication of the solar system which forms a part of the current exhibition 'Out of this World – Wonders of the Solar System'. The cosmic surrounding in connection to the outstanding acoustic in the Gasometer's interior provided a spherical mood. The audience was amazed without exceptions and also singer Steve Hogarth was impressed by space and atmosphere.
